Trekking in the Annapurna Region
The Annapurna region attracts largest number of trekkers in Nepal. The region locates 200 km west of Kathmandu the capital city of Nepal and north of Pokhara Valley. The Pokhara Valley is renowned in the world as city of natural lakes. The Annapurna region is boundaried by 2 major rivers Kaligandaki in the West and Marshyangdi in the East. Kaligandaki river gorge is regarded as deepest river gorge in the world, inbetween mount Annapurna and Dhaulagiri both above 8000m. Annapurna range has a dozen of peaks above 7000m and others above 6000m. The highest of the area is Annapurna -1 of 8091m -a challenge for world class mountaineers. The Thorong-La(pass) combines the two valleys Marshyangdi and Kaligandaki. The pass provides challenging hiking and excellent view of the mountains.
Along with the high mountains, the area is unique destination for culture lovers. The area is inhabited by Tibetan Buddhism followers in the northern Himalayan slopes (Manang valley & Upper Kaligandaki valley) and Hinduism below hill sides. The temple of Muktinath is the hearty harmony symbol of both Hindus and Buddhist. Nowhere else in the world people can see such an equality between two religions worshipping to same shrine with hearty loyal. Once you start trekking in this region you will encounter the Indo-Ayrans- the followers of Hinduism having agriculture as their main profession and their fettle and productive lands as the source of their livelihood. On the other hand while you pass through the tiny urban areas of this region you find most of the people engaged in inland trading and commercial activities. The Gurungs and Magars both from Mongolian origin are well known as brave British Gurkha fighters dates back to first and second world war. You will taste the delicious apple pies of upper Kaligandaki valley made by the Thakali people known as famous cooks.
The Annapurna conservation area project (ACAP) has been taking care of the area to preserve nature and culture of the region.
