Kathmandu, the capital city is named after a temple like stage (Mandap) which is believed to be built out of a single tree. We can see the stage at Kathmandu in Durbar Square. The city is also known as Kantipur which means the deity of glory. The major tourist attractions in Kathmandu include:

Basantapur Durbar Square:

Durbar Square was the original palace for Nepal kings before the King moved to new palace in middle of 19th century at present Palace. Coronation ceremony of New king is taken place here. The square contains 400 years massive palace decorated by amazing wood art and traditional architecture. The area is filled by many old temples, shrines and statues of early mediaeval period to later period of 18th centaury. Some of major temples and shrines to mention are:

02. Giant figure of the God Kalabhairab (17th century)
03. The nine storied Palace (18th century)
04. The living Goddess' temple (18th century)
05. The Kastamandap (14th century)


Temple of Kumari (The Only Living Goddess in the World):

The temple and the holy quadrangle with a Buddhist stupa at the centre form the residential quarter of the Chaste Virgin Living Goddess called Kumari. The traditional building has profusely carved wooden balconies and window screens. The non-buddhist and the non-Hindu visitors may enter the courtyard called the bahal. From there they can acknowledge the sight of the Kumari up above at the Balcony.

Pashupatinath Temple:

Pashupati Temple is the temple of Lord Shiva, the most praised god in Hinduism and is situated 5 km east from the main part of the city on the banks of the holy Bagmati River. It has a two storied golden roof and has silver doors to all four sides. It is the centre of the annual pilgrimage on the day of Maha Shivaratri. Only Hindus are allowed in the temple premise, however visitors can clearly see the temple and the activities performed in the temple premises from the eastern bank of the Bagmati.

Swoyambhunath:

Like Pashupati is to the Hindus so to is Soyambhunath for Buddhists. This is one of the world's most glorious and oldest Chaitya. It is said to be more than 2000yrs old but was rebuilt in the 16th century after a fire. It is situated 3 km west from the main part of the city on the top of a small hill. Its main structure is made of a solid hemisphere of brick and clay supporting a lofty conical spire capped by a pinnacle of copper gilt. Painted on the four sides of the spire base are the all seeing eyes of Buddha. The hill is a mosaic of small Chaityas and pagoda temples, from where most of the Kathmandu Valley can be viewed.

Bouddhanath:

Also a famous Buddhist Chaitya situated eight kilometers east of Kathmandu. It was built in the 3rd century AD. It is built on an octagonal inset with prayer wheels. This ancient stupa is one of the biggest stupas in the world. Same as in Swayambhunath the four sides of the spire bases are painted with the all-seeing eyes of Buddha.

The Sleeping Vishnu (Buddhanilkantha) :
Situated in the northern suburbs of the valley just at the foot of Mt. Shivapuri, thisi san enchanting Bishnu (one of major gods of Hindus) temple is the master peace of Nepali stone carving. The shrine was established sometime between 7-9th century with giant Vishnu laid on serpents' bed amidst the pious pool. The surrounding pond actually represents sea. The statue is believed one of the biggest monolithic (made of single stone) Vishnu statue in the world.
 
Pharping:
This a historic place for both Hindus and Buddhists where Hindu mediator Gorakhnath and Buddhist Teacher Padma Sambhava (Guru Rinpoche) had meditated and achieved super natural power. Guru Rinpoche (8th century) is attributed as founder of Tibetan Buddhism. The old caves where Gorakhnath and Guru Rinpoche had meditated are preserved by local prists and the area is developing as Tibetan Buddhist centre as many monasteries are being established in recent years. The famous blood thirsty Hindu Goddess Dakchin Kali is about 2 Km south from here.
